Rhye's and Fall of Civilization

Rhye's and Fall of Civilization is Gabriele "Rhye" Trovato's historical mod for Civilization 4, played on an Earth map where civilizations appear at their historical dates, chase unique victory conditions and can collapse in civil wars; Beyond the Sword shipped it, its final patch came out on Jun 2, 2010, and Dawn of Civilization (version 1.18.4, Apr 21, 2026) is its maintained successor.

Rhye's and Fall of Civilization is a historical mod for Civilization 4 in which civilizations appear on an Earth map at their historical dates, pursue victory conditions of their own and can collapse, written by Gabriele "Rhye" Trovato. The Beyond the Sword manual (p. 41) describes it as a mod that "simulates the rise and fall of civilizations throughout the history of the Earth", one of two fan mods Beyond the Sword put on its disc. Its last patch for Beyond the Sword came out on Jun 2, 2010, per Rhye's site, and the mod lives on in Dawn of Civilization, a fan successor still updated in 2026 (GitHub).

How Rhye's and Fall plays

Rhye's and Fall replaces Civ 4's random world with history. Its description page lists a 124x68 world map with an enlarged Europe for better play, civilizations that appear at different times, and an AI for each civilization that sends Settlers to found cities at their historical sites, under their historical names. If you pick a late civilization, the game plays itself until it arrives: the page's example is the Arabs, who take the field in 620 AD.

Civilizations rise and fall. The Beyond the Sword manual (p. 41) explains that you can start with an early civilization such as Egypt, then switch to a newer one as it arises and conquer the "decadent" empire you just left, while older civilizations "fall on their own, destroyed by civil wars, corrupt governments, and massive barbarian attacks".

Stability decides who falls. Per the mod's description, unstable empires risk secession and civil war; a plague spreads across the world, Python events recreate historical barbarian invasions, resources appear over time, World Congresses trade cities between powers, and a revised alliance system leads to world wars. Rhye's site published a stability guide in June 2007.

Unique Historical Victories

Every civilization in Rhye's and Fall has its own victory conditions. The Beyond the Sword manual (p. 41) says each one has "its own unique abilities, unique victory conditions, and unique AI" objectives, which it credits for the mod's replay value. The mod's description page claims that this idea of unique powers and victories "inspired Civilization Revolution"; that is the mod's own claim. Neither page lists the conditions; the game shows each civilization's goals when you play it.

History

Rhye's and Fall grew out of a Civilization 3 modpack. The Beyond the Sword manual (p. 41) calls it the sequel to Rhye's of Civilization, "one of the most popular modpacks ever created" for Civilization 3, and the mod's site says it was first called "Rhye's Catapult project". Its timeline, as Rhye's site gives it:

The version in Beyond the Sword is an enhanced edition of the mod, per its description, which says the latest release needs the expansion patched to 3.19. Mac players can play the version that ships with the game, the downloads page says, and it links a patch for the Mac version's 3.19 bugs.

Reception

Critics singled the mod out in Beyond the Sword's reviews. GameSpot's review of Jul 25, 2007 called Rhye's and Fall "excellent", in contrast with the weaker "Afterworld" scenario. The mod's press page collects reviews from Yahoo! Games (Tom Chick), GameSpot, IGN and Apolyton, a 5 out of 5 from the Italian magazine Giochi per il mio Computer and 9 out of 10 from France's Cyberstratège, and its home page notes that its Earth map won first prize in the GameFlood contest on Aug 4, 2007.

Dawn of Civilization: the successor

Dawn of Civilization is the maintained successor to Rhye's and Fall. Its GitHub README calls it "The Dawn of Civilization mod for Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword, based on the popular Rhye's and Fall of Civilization mod", and its SourceForge project has been open since Jan 31, 2013.

It is far bigger than the original. The version 1.18 release notes of Nov 20, 2025 list 61 playable civilizations, a new 80x125 world map, a tech tree of 141 technologies over seven eras and 42 civics in six categories; the README adds a more transparent stability system, spies that gain experience and promotions, and a new Unique Religious Victory.

It is still being updated. Version 1.18.4 came out on Apr 21, 2026, after 1.18.3 on Mar 7, 2026 and 1.18.2 on Dec 30, 2025, and the code was last changed on Oct 20, 2026 (GitHub).

To install it, use one of the installers on SourceForge (with or without its optional Modules), or copy the code into Beyond the Sword's Mods folder and name the folder "RFC Dawn of Civilization", as the README says. Other mods are on Mods, and the scenarios that shipped beside Rhye's and Fall are on Scenarios.
