Running Civilization 4 Today
Civilization 4 still runs on Windows 10 and 11 PCs from Steam (the Complete Edition, patched to Beyond the Sword 3.19) or GOG (DRM-free); Kotaku said in 2025 it "will run easily on any modern PC". Aspyr stopped selling its 32-bit Mac version in 2019, so it does not run on macOS Catalina or later, and Linux and Steam Deck players use Proton, which fixed a crash on world creation in 2022.
Civilization 4 runs on today's Windows PCs from its digital stores: Kotaku wrote in September 2025 that the Complete Edition "will run easily on any modern PC", and Steam and GOG both sell it with every patch applied. The Mac version is a different story: Aspyr stopped selling its 32-bit Mac games, Civ 4 among them, on Jun 17, 2019, ahead of macOS Catalina, and online play on Mac is no longer supported. On Linux and Steam Deck the Windows version runs through Valve's Proton, which fixed a crash on world creation in July 2022.

Windows 10 and Windows 11
The Steam and GOG versions are the ones to run on a current Windows PC. Steam's Complete Edition bundles Civ 4, Warlords, Beyond the Sword and Colonization, updated through Steam to Beyond the Sword's final patch, 3.19, posted on Steam on Jun 11, 2009. GOG's Complete Edition is DRM-free and Windows only. Both are covered on Complete Edition and Where to Buy.
Its hardware needs are tiny by today's standards. Steam's store page still shows the 2005 requirements, never updated: Windows 2000 or XP, a 1.2 GHz Pentium 4 or Athlon, 256 MB of RAM, a 64 MB graphics card with hardware T&L (GeForce 2 or Radeon 7500), 1.7 GB of disk space and DirectX 9.0c; the recommended spec is a 1.8 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM and a 128 MB card with pixel and vertex shaders.
Neither 2K nor Firaxis has published a statement on Windows 10 or 11. Press describes it as running without trouble: Kotaku wrote in September 2025, when the Complete Edition was free with Amazon Prime as a DRM-free GOG code, that it "will run easily on any modern PC", while PC Gamer called Civilization 3 and 4 "a little creaky these days" in February 2026, noting that Civ 4 "still has its adherents". No allowed source documents fixes for old retail discs, widescreen or high-DPI screens, so this page gives none; the 2009 retail Complete Edition was itself "entirely DRM-free", per 2K's release.
Mac
Civ 4 came to the Mac through Aspyr, and its Mac life ended in 2019. Aspyr shipped the port as a Universal Binary for PowerPC and Intel Macs at $49.99 from Jun 26, 2006, and on Jun 17, 2019 stopped selling its 32-bit Mac games before macOS Catalina dropped 32-bit apps; Cult of Mac's list of the removed games names Civilization IV and Civilization IV: Colonization. MacRumors noted that owners could keep playing on macOS Mojave and earlier.
So a Mac running macOS Catalina or later cannot run the Mac version. Steam's page still lists a Mac build, recommending macOS 10.12 Sierra and an Intel processor, and warns that the "Mac version's Online Multiplayer is no longer supported": 2K's support page said the Mac Steam versions never received the 2014 Steamworks update. Mods with their own DLL never ran on a Mac anyway, per the Realism Invictus FAQ.
The Mac version needed one earlier fix. In November 2014 Aspyr pulled support for OS X 10.10 Yosemite for Civ 4 and Colonization over "a python library issue", then posted that "A fix is now live!".
Linux and Steam Deck
There is no Linux version, but the Windows version runs through Proton, Valve's compatibility layer in Steam. Steam lists Civ 4 for Windows and Mac only (Steam). In July 2022 Proton Experimental fixed Civ 4 "crashing on world creation", GamingOnLinux reported, and the same fix shipped in stable Proton 7.0-4 in August 2022.
On Steam Deck, the Complete Edition was listed as Playable in a SteamDeckHQ report of Nov 8, 2024.
Online play after GameSpy
Online play now goes through Steam. GameSpy, which ran the game's online lobbies, shut down, and 2K's GameSpy titles went offline from May 31, 2014; 2K moved Civ 4 and its expansions to Steamworks in an update posted on Jun 5, 2014 that works "identically" except that the "Direct IP" option was removed. For players who wanted Direct IP back, 2K put the original GameSpy-era build on Steam as an unsupported beta branch, "Original Release - UNSUPPORTED" (PC only), chosen in the game's Properties under Betas, per its support page. Hot Seat, LAN, PitBoss and Play by E-mail are on Multiplayer.
Mods on a modern PC
Big mods are where Civ 4 shows its age, because the game is a 32-bit program. The Realism Invictus FAQ warns of memory allocation errors with big mods and points to a "MAF fix", and Caveman2Cosmos added a "Graphics paging" option that cut its RAM use by about 30%. Realism Invictus, AdvCiv and Dawn of Civilization all target Beyond the Sword 3.19, the version Steam installs, and Realism Invictus says the Steam version is supported. Installing them is on Mods.
Still played
Civ 4 still has a steady audience on Steam. Steam's own count showed 1,695 players in Beyond the Sword, 696 in the base game, 355 in Colonization and 172 in Warlords at 17:45 UTC on Oct 21, 2026, and Beyond the Sword's Steam page rated it "Overwhelmingly Positive", with 96% of 2,898 English reviews positive.
Frequently asked questions
Does Civ 4 work on Windows 11? Civilization 4 runs on Windows 10 and 11 PCs from Steam or GOG, and Kotaku wrote in September 2025 that it "will run easily on any modern PC"; 2K has published no statement on either Windows version.
Can I play Civ 4 on a Mac? Not on a current Mac: Aspyr's Mac version of Civilization 4 is a 32-bit app, which macOS Catalina and later cannot run, and Aspyr stopped selling it on Jun 17, 2019; owners can still play it on macOS Mojave or earlier, without online play.
Does Civ 4 work on Steam Deck? Yes: SteamDeckHQ listed Civilization 4: The Complete Edition as Playable on Steam Deck in November 2024, running through Proton.
Does Civ 4 run on Linux? Civilization 4 has no Linux version, but the Windows version runs through Steam's Proton, which fixed a crash on world creation in Proton 7.0-4 in August 2022.
What are Civ 4's system requirements? Civilization 4's minimum on Steam is Windows 2000 or XP, a 1.2 GHz Pentium 4 or Athlon, 256 MB of RAM, a 64 MB graphics card and 1.7 GB of disk space, so any modern PC exceeds it.
Can I still play Civ 4 multiplayer online? Yes: since Jun 5, 2014 Civilization 4's online play on Windows runs through Steamworks instead of GameSpy, without the old Direct IP option, while online play in the Mac version is no longer supported.
Which version of Civ 4 should I buy today? The Complete Edition on Steam or GOG includes Civilization 4, Warlords, Beyond the Sword and Colonization, already patched; GOG's copy is DRM-free.

MultiplayerCivilization 4 is played online through Steam (Steamworks replaced GameSpy in June 2014), on a LAN, in Hot Seat on one PC, by e-mail, and on Pitboss servers for long games; the Steamworks update removed Direct IP, which survives only in an unsupported beta branch of the original release, and Steam no longer supports the Mac version's online play. - ModsCivilization 4 was built to be modded, with XML, Python, the World Builder and a Game and AI SDK, and its biggest mods are still updated: Realism Invictus 3.81 (2026), Dawn of Civilization 1.18.4 (2026), Caveman2Cosmos v44 (2025) and AdvCiv, while Fall from Heaven 2, BUG, Better BTS AI and K-Mod are finished classics. Almost all of them need Beyond the Sword patched to 3.19 and go in its Mods folder.

Beginner's GuideNew Civilization 4 players should play the tutorial, start on Settler or Chieftain difficulty at Normal speed, build a Warrior, an explorer, a Worker and then Settlers, found cities on rivers and coasts about 4 to 5 tiles apart, and watch city maintenance on the Financial Advisor (F2). - Cottages and SpecialistsCivilization 4 has two main ways to pay for research. Cottages grow into Hamlets, Villages and Towns that make more commerce the longer they are worked (faster with Emancipation, richer with Free Speech and Universal Suffrage); specialists give fixed output plus Great Person points (unlimited with Caste System, +3 research each with Representation).
- Culture Victory GuideA Civilization 4 culture victory needs three cities with Legendary culture, 50,000 culture points each on Normal speed. Get there with religions and their buildings, culture wonders, Artists and Great Artists' Great Works (+4,000 each), the Hermitage and Free Speech (+100% each), and the culture slider late in the game.
